"From the Bayou to the Port"
slideshow and interview produced by: Alex Gutierrez
Thanks to the Savannah African Art Museum for hosting the 2nd Annual Jazz Concert. It offered an unforgettable experience for jazz lovers with an outstanding performance by Teddy Adams and Sextet. Before it started we had the privilege of sitting down with Teddy Adams for an insightful talk where he shared insights into his musical journey and inspirations.
AN EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH SAVANNAH'S HEART OF JAZZ
Teddy Adams began discussing his early influences, particularly his older brother, a saxophonist, whose practice sessions inspired him to start playing music. Initially, he played the saxophone but eventually switched to trombone, believing it would be easier, though quickly realized and accepted the rigorous challenges he was to face in the upcoming years.
Growing up in Savannah, Georgia, a city rich in jazz history, Teddy was surrounded by influential figures like James Moody, Trummy Young, and Ben Riley. He credited his mentor, the great Willie Draper, with deepening his understanding of jazz's profound nature. Adams also mentioned key trombone influences, including Benny Green and J.J. Johnson, emphasizing his roots in the bebop tradition.
Additionally, he discussed his new book, Keepin’ the Beat: The Musical Journey Continues, a sequel to his previous work, The Up of the Down Beat. This latest book chronicles his experiences as a jazz musician, paying homage to his Savannah roots and sharing both humorous and poignant stories from his life in music. You can now find it on Barnes & Noble and Amazon.
